Support our farms, nourish our neighbors.

Hunger is rising in Kitsap County—more than 22,000 people in our community rely on food assistance, and that number is growing rapidly. Fresh, local food is essential to food banks throughout the county, but the funding that makes it available has been cut. USDA programs that once allowed food banks to buy produce from local farms have been abruptly ended, leaving farmers and families in a critical gap.

Yet a solution is here: dozens of local farmers in Kitsap County have the resources and the dedication to provide fresh food to those in need.

But they can’t do it alone.

That’s why WSU Kitsap Extension and Kitsap Conservation District have come together with local farmers to launch the Kitsap Farmers Fighting Hunger campaign.

Through this partnership, community donations to the WSU Foundation directly fund the purchase of local produce for food banks.

Every dollar supports farmers, feeds our neighbors, and strengthens our local food system. Together, we can make an immediate impact.

"Small scale direct market farmers are mission driven. We feel compelled to feed people.

It has been a refreshing addition to my income stream to add crops and harvests earmarked for those who are currently unable to afford ultra fresh local veggies. My customers agree that the nutrient density of this just-harvested organically grown produce is palpable."

"The food bank sales allow us to harvest crops at their peak even if another market isn't available and get that food onto people's tables. This has been a great support to our farm because it has helped us diversify where we sell and who has access to our food.

Through farm to food bank funding, we have been able to increase the number of people eating locally grown food."

"Equitable food access is our mission—hunger relief puts that value directly on our neighbors’ tables.

Partnering with food banks gives us predictable income and a way to serve our community.

Healthy food is a right, not a privilege."

"Selling food to the food bank is core to our mission as a farm to assure that everyone has access to fresh, nutritious food, not only the affluent. It helps close the loop on our production by reducing waste and ensuring that any overproduction makes its way to hungry mouths. It also helps stabilize our financial picture on our small local farm by maximizing the production potential, regardless of weather conditions which could deter sales. It motivates everyone on our crew to contribute."

"Working with food banks helps keep our farm running. It gives us a steady place to send our produce, especially when we’ve got more than we can sell elsewhere. It’s good for business and good for the community—win-win.

At Kitsap Farms, we care about growing good food and making sure it reaches people who need it. "
